THE POWER OF NO
SELF WORTH & PRESERVATION
By: Dr. Carleah East, LMHC
Greetings Family,
When was the last time you said no? When was the last time you made yourself a priority? ........It's been a while right?! We live in a world in which we are constantly pressured to live up to society's expectations. There is this ever-looming feeling of guilt if we don't live up to or cater to certain pressures. We are all juggling families, careers, friendships etc.; and with our hands full and our minds consumed there ends up being no room for us.
So answer this... how are you going to continue to be strong for others when you are not creating a solid foundation for yourself? Stop putting YOU on the back burner! You are worth more than the duties you perform, the titles behind your name, and items on your list. There is Power in the word No. I understand it can be difficult to turn down others or opportunities, so setting boundaries is key.
1. Know your limits - listen to that little voice of caution; there is a reason for that pause in response.
2. Learn to tolerate reactions - others may not like that you are saying no, but remember, it's now about you. Those that are truly in your corner will not only understand but may even offer support.
3. Engage in self-care - you are the foundation. And your foundation is made stronger when you take time to relax, disconnect and recharge. Things like taking a bubble bath, quality time or meditation can recharge your spirit.
Sometimes it's important to say no to others in order to say yes to yourself. Remember, you are your most valuable asset!
